The overall situation is compounded by political or religious movements that reinforce the notion that only one individual in a marriage, by virtue of having the correct political or religious view, is right, and that the other needs constantly to be monitored, saved, redeemed. Radical feminism and fundamentalist religious movements, with their “us against them” attitude, tend to divide relationships rather than unite them. If women are taught by radical feminists (to whom many look for leadership) that all men are oppressors, rapists, wife batterers, and/or child molesters, and that all women’s problems result from male oppression, they will not be very much inclined to look objectively at themselves and do the kind of give-and-take working-through that a relationship requires if it is to survive the dark periods that all relationships have.
